Get Ready for PDC 2018!

We hope you’re as excited for Guelph Engineering’s 2018 Professional Development Conference as we are! PDC will be happening Saturday, January 20, 2018 from 8:00am – 4:30pm.

You may have noticed some changes to PDC 2018 compared to previous years. This year PDC will consist of a  graduate school presentation, 2 workshops “Getting Started” and “Industry Insight”, and a themed of panel  “Mindset to Achieve”. People will be divided into workshops based on both discipline and industry of interest. Both workshops are excellent networking opportunities.

The “Getting Started” workshops are focused on what steps to take when applying for jobs, including student positions and after graduation. You can ask questions regarding cover letters, resumes, interview tips, and networking advice.

The “Industry Insight” workshops are designed to provide exposure to specific fields of work (i.e. Research and Development, Consulting, Manufacturing). You should get an understanding of what it’s like to work in that industry day-to-day and discover whether it’s a good fit for you. It’s great to ask specific questions about the company, various offered positions, opportunity for growth, and collaboration between different departments.

Networking Lunch: Don’t be afraid to network! Speakers love to talk to students and always give great advice. They are at the conference because they want to share their experiences and provide YOU with their insight.
It’s a good idea to look up the speakers attending. See who you want to talk to and perhaps come up with some specific questions for them.

As mentioned a Panel Discussion will also be part of the conference. Note that this panel is themed, so any questions prepared beforehand should suit the theme of the panel. The theme is “Mindset to Achieve” and we want you to learn more about how to maintain your determination and passion and how to put it towards your own successful career and home life.
